Public liability (or general liability) insurance covers you for legal costs and compensation that you may have to pay if you are found liable to someone because you caused them physical or mental harm, or loss or damage to their property.  It will also cover your own defence costs.

Public liability insurance also applies where you are liable for the actions of another party acting on your behalf (“vicarious liability”), such as an employee or sub-contractor.
